What is the Social Security System in Portugal?
Portugal has what is known as the "Social Security System". It is the primary social protection system in Portugal and covers employees, self-employed workers, and public servants.
How can I request my personal NISS?
You may apply for the allocation of a Social Security Identification Number (NISS) using the online form available on the Social Security Portal: https://www.seg-social.pt/pedido-de-formulario-niss-cidadao-estrangeiro
I've received an email from Social Security giving me my personal NISS, how can I get it?
If you have received an e-mail from Segurança Social informing you that you have been assigned your personal NISS, you have two options to obtain it:
a) You can go to the Social Security office in person, or
b) If you are the director of the company, you can inform your accountant to obtain the NISS for you.
How can I be exempt from contributing to social security?
The director's exemption from Social Security contributions can only be requested and possibly approved if he or she makes contributions for another company inside or outside Portugal. If the contributions are made outside Portugal, it is important to obtain a document to prove this ("Form A1").
I'm a shareholder in the company, do I have to pay social security?
No, only directors (and employees — if applicable) have a contribution obligation.
I'm a company director, do I have to pay social security?
Yes. However, if you work elsewhere and already make Social Security contributions, you may be exempt from paying social security, but you must apply for the exemption. We can help you with this.

What is Social Security Contribution (TSU — Taxa Social Única)?
Social Security Contributions (TSU) apply to companies that have employees under their responsibility (including the manager). The company pays a total of 34.75% to Social Security: the employee's contributions (11%) plus an employer contribution of 23.75%. The amount to be paid is calculated based on the employee/manager's gross salary. Only the 11% will be deducted from the employee's salary and remitted by the employer. TSU must be paid between the 10th and 20th day of the following month after the payments are made.
